current reading

I've really been neglecting this community! Has anyone been reading any Irish authors lately? At the moment, I'm in the middle of J Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla, a novella about a female vampire. So far, it's very suspenseful.

What about the rest of you?

I think Le Fanu is quite an un(der)sung literary hero. He does an amazing job of creating atmosphere. And Carmilla is REALLY edgy for its time, because it's so erotic.

So far I really am enjoying Achebe! I've just gotten to the part where white folks start showing up. :-/ I appreciate the simplicity of the writing style, which leaves the reader so much room to decide for herself how to feel about the different characters. I also really appreciate that Okonkwo is a complex character: there are admirable things about him, and horrible things about him.

Having just finished the novella,I totally agree about Le Fanu's skill with creating atmosphere--it was very dreamlike, and so rich in subtext for a relatively short work. I particularly liked the detail of how Carmilla was limited to using aliases that were all anagrams of the same name, which I thought was a great symbol for how she repeated the same patterns over and over under various guises.

I also agree with you about Achebe; the complexity of the characters and situations was one of the things I really liked about the book. It never gets preachy or tells the reader what to think.
